‘Arzhang’ is the name of a book of illustrations by the Iranian prophet Mani (ca. 216–274). Known as a painter and the founder of Manichaeism, Mani produced illustrations to spread his teachings to disciples. Despite gaining a tremendous following, today there are very few records left in Mesopotamia or Egypt, the two main regions where Manichaeism first emerged, of an artistic tradition associated with the religion. Surviving paintings are miniatures and murals created between the 9th and 12th centuries, found in western China. Inspired by these works, Iranian artist Nikzad Nojoumi created his own Manichean interpretations, which are featured on the pages of this notebook.
