The term “necessary architecture” evokes a blurred group of essential buildings, minimal works, and emergency structures characterised by a modest use of resources, the elemental stability of their materials and techniques, and the social urgency of the needs they address. This issue’s selection of works follows in this vein, examining the needs which arise in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and how architecture responds to these often precarious contexts: with a drive to combat poverty with beauty. Featured are a community centre in Bangladesh by Kashef Chowdhury, a chapel in Ho Chi Minh City by a21 studio, Project Nakuru by Orkidstudio in Kenya, and more.
