Louise Lawler's practice highlights the ways in which value and significance are assigned to artworks. Her critical strategies expose how art is produced, consumed, and understood, challenging notions of authorship and meaning. In Indipendenza's former apartment setting, her series Tracings (2013-present), Adjusted to Fit (2010-present), and Paperweights (1988-present) draw attention to how we present and organize our lives. Fredrik Værslev’s work explores the intersection of painting, architecture, and urban environments. For this exhibition, he created a series of site-specific paintings (2021-22) that echo the dimensions, textures, and colors of Indipendenza’s spaces. These trompe l’oeil terrazzo paintings mimic the gallery floor patterns while incorporating drips and swirls that evoke the ceiling frescoes, playing with the contrast between real and illusion, function and decoration. Together, Lawler and Værslev's works invite viewers to consider how context influences an artwork's meaning, and how an artwork can, in turn, shape its surroundings.
