The project originates from a stereoscopic image by the painter Giuseppe Augusto Levis (1879–1926), part of a series dedicated to the historical depiction of the First World War. Levis created tableaux vivants using local peasants from Piedmont, hired specifically for the occasion. Squillacciotti recontextualises the work in a contemporary setting, adding further layers to its staging. The book examines the project from a theoretical and narrative perspective, incorporating contributions from the curators ARTECO and CRIPTA747, as well as researchers Vittoria Martini and Kamil Dalkir. Their analyses explore the extent to which visual constructions shape the viewer’s perception and interpretation, often anticipating and occasionally subverting the authenticity of the narrative.
