Portuguese visual artist Ana Jotta has formed her oeuvre through a sequence of breakthroughs that embody some sort of erasure – whether of her own previous footsteps, modernist ideology and post-modern mythologies, or the notion of authorship – either by deconstructing or rebuilding it. In so doing, she attempts to dismantle the idea of a coherent or univocal style. Through a bare economy of means, newspaper and magazine clippings, comics, vintage advertisements, photographs, collage, handwritten scribbles, and various appropriated media come together in unexpected ways. These juxtapositions drive her work with a great sense of intelligence and wit.
