The built environment in Spain has been changing for many years due to the migration of people to large urban centres. In the process, old and modern ruins are left behind, remaining untouched until something new arises in their place. While the big cities are changing rapidly and major projects are being developed in tourist areas where the money flows in, the old interior remains home to vast, raw landscapes, with villages that seem to spring organically from the soil. Michiel Schierbeek’s ‘Transitions in Spain’ is partly a tribute to his father, Bert, a writer and poet whose extensive travels throughout the country since the 1950s served as inspiration for much of his writing.
