Bałuty is a district in the Polish city of Łódź. During World War II, one of the largest and most horrifying Jewish ghettos existed here. What the Nazis did not destroy has become residential again. Jörg Winde’s photos taken in Bałuty show in a stark yet beautiful way the hard life of the people who live in the district today.
