The fourth in a series of publications produced in cooperation with Dutch publishing house Uitgeverij de Buitenkant, ‘Sketches’ was designed by Hansje van Halem. Since establishing her own studio in 2003, the graphic designer has been working on alphabets, patterns, textures, and more. Van Halem’s designs are layered graphic landscapes that invite the gaze to linger. Trippy colours, eye-catching surfaces, and quirky complexities evoke memories of episodes from the history of design. The focus here is on the domain of the printer: ink and paper, line and grid, overprint and knockout. It is an interplay of experimentation and a search for variation, full of surprises and serendipity.
