For the 60th edition of the Venice Biennale, the Dutch Pavilion was given to the Congolese collective CATPC. Its members are not “foreigners” as defined by Biennale curator Adriano Pedrosa, nor do they wish to emigrate north of the equator. Their main concern is the recovery of their own soil, tarnished by centuries of colonisation and exploitation. It is thanks to artist Renzo Martens and curator Hicham Khalidi that CATPC appears in this context. The figural sculptures they created for the pavilion function much like contemporary power objects, charged with the violence of ongoing atrocities while opening new possibilities for healing. This catalogue documents their story.
