Carola Bonfili set out to create a video game with a rich, layered narrative, drawing inspiration from Flaubert, H.G. Wells, brutalist architecture, and generative AI. At the heart of Second Order Reality is M’ling, a ten-year-old anthropomorphic monkey undergoing a mysterious transformation as her body turns to stone. Seeking guidance, she ventures into the forest, where a robotic being shelters her. Through this journey of self-discovery, she learns to coexist with her own demons. The publication opens with a graphic novel reinterpreting the game’s trailer, The Stone Monkey, followed by insights into the design and development process. Essays by Bonfili, curators Ilaria Gianni and Daniela Cotimbo, and contributors Domenico Quaranta and Valentina Tanni explore the game’s narrative, conceptual foundations, and cultural significance, examining its interplay between perception, fiction, and new media.
