In this book, Simnikiwe Buhlungu takes the ubiquitous water puddle as her starting point. Featuring contributions from musicians, artists, curators, and scientists worldwide, it builds on research from hygrosummons (iter.01) - commissioned by Chisenhale Gallery, London, and Kunstinstituut Melly, Rotterdam - to explore the literal and metaphorical possibilities of the water cycle. Buhlungu’s original writing, using footnotes to weave personal anecdotes and literary references, sits alongside drawings, texts, song lyrics, posters, and correspondences. A collection of research images reveals geographical sites and experimental processes shaping her work. Examining puddle microbiology through art, science, geography, and history, Buhlungu challenges standardised scientific language. Her ongoing inquiries into sensing instruments and hidden knowledge systems position the puddle as an autonomous body of water, questioning how knowledge is formed, by whom, and how it is encountered. These ideas are embedded in the book’s design, making it both an index of her practice and an extension of her experiments in exhibition and publishing.
