Bruno Pélassy (b. 1966, Vientiane, Laos) was a multidisciplinary artist whose work spanned jewellery, sculpture, drawing, and film, blending haute couture with second-hand aesthetics to explore themes of adornment, technology, and identity. Raised in a Catholic family, he was deeply influenced by his parents’ vibrant souvenirs and his own experiences as a gay man. In the 1990s, Pélassy gained recognition for works like Bestioles (“Beasties”), robotic wigs animated with jerky movements, and the film Sans titre, Sang titre, Cent titres (1995), made from pirated movie fragments. His art, marked by biting humour and vibrant craftsmanship, often featured glass-bead sculptures, including his signature phalluses. Weakened by AIDS, Pélassy created fantastical creatures from pearls, silk, and silicone, which surrounded him in his final years. His last solo exhibition, Shim. Double Gender, was held in Nice before his death in 2002 at the age of 36.
