This catalogue accompanies Alfredo Volpi: Lucca–São Paulo (1896–1988), the first Italian exhibition dedicated to Alfredo Volpi, held in 2024 at the Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci. Born in Lucca in 1896 and raised in São Paulo from the age of two, Volpi’s art reflects the 20th century’s transformations, blending modernity, tradition, and popular motifs. His work explores universal themes—representation, abstraction, daily life, and religious iconography—while remaining deeply rooted in local culture. Influenced by São Paulo’s vernacular architecture, European avant-gardes (Cézanne, Matisse, Mondrian, Albers), and Italian artists (Carrà, Morandi), Volpi developed a distinctive style of geometric patterns and vibrant colour, evolving in the 1950s into abstract urban views. Curated by Cristiano Raimondi, the exhibition spans Volpi’s prolific years from the 1940s to the 1970s, celebrating him as a master craftsman and colourist. It also marks the 150th anniversary of Italian immigration to Brazil, exploring the interplay between Italian and Brazilian artistic cultures. The catalogue features newly published archival materials and offers personal insights into Volpi’s life and legacy.
