In one of Robert Musil’s most enigmatic stories, The Blackbird, the narrator says: “I just want to tell you my stories to find out if they ring true.” The same could be said of the stories in this book. Each narrative recounts autobiographical episodes that might have been wiser left unsaid. In her quest to reveal the most hidden of threads, and with unyielding resolve, Isabella Ducrot crosses the sharp-edged boundaries of modesty - whether in an account of a banquet she hosts for underprivileged children using inferior ingredients, blending cocoa with water, or in the many snapshots of a life lived beneath the shadow of absence, knowledge, and meaning. The narrator’s view of these fragments of memory is often tinged with uncertainty and doubt, yet the shame of remaining silent would have been even more intolerable.
