The large rolls of negatives in the ICCD’s Aerophoto Library form a parallel world of the already-mapped state, stored in countless cans reminiscent of Piero Manzoni’s iconic 1961 works. Each can bears the name of the Ferrania film that gives the book its title: AVIOPANCRO. Some cans contain only dark, gluey remnants; others hold vast visual archives - images once treated as topographical data, now reimagined by Barbieri as objects of new meaning. Freed from their military constraints and brimming with analogue materiality, these negatives become, in Barbieri’s hands, sculptural forms - no longer instruments of surveillance, but poetic codes of an already-documented reality. The book presents three series: jars, featuring the cylindrical film containers; ephemeral sculptures, with the monumental rolls of negatives; and a selection of images from the Aerophoto Library’s extraordinary archive.
