With its vibrant facade, the Palads has been a feature of Copenhagen’s cityscape since the work was unveiled in September 1989. Palads is one of the most famous works by Poul Gernes (1925–1996), as well as one of the most discussed public artworks in Denmark. This book, rather than offering a conventional art historical review, is an experiment in art communication. Three artistic contributions activate the decoration, in line with Gernes’s belief that art should not be a static, museum-bound object, but a communal matter that energises people upon encountering it. Texts by Anders Kold, Kristian Vistrup Madsen, and Natalie Körner shed light on the work’s relevance today.
