With this study, architect and educator Anders Gammelgaard Nielsen aims to shed light on the relationship between the way we build and the atmosphere in our spaces. He selected nine spaces, different in both character and underlying building culture, where each offers its own contained universe. Examining them chronologically, it becomes apparent that variation decreases as building culture transitions from artisan-based to industrial processes. This is also marked by decisive changes in their atmospheres. Gammelgaard Nielsen’s research uncovers a cultural shift where, in the space of a few generations, we have moved from warm emanations to cold rationality.
