Mark Whalen conceives sophisticated sculptures of cartoonish heads and faces, appearing in intensely saturated and vibrant tones of pinks, blues, and metallics and fused with everyday objects like pencils and matchsticks. The seemingly nonsensical effigies investigate the relationship between absurd and mundane, inviting the viewer to take part in their narrative. Whalen gives form to plastic-symbolic duality, endowing his object oddities with an open meaning, and perhaps even suggesting an autobiographic component. This catalogue appears in conjunction with a solo show by Whalen at CAC Málaga, which comprises more than 20 works produced expressly for the exhibition.
