Yasuhide Kuge’s series ‘Mnemosyne’ focuses on two artist-performers, Norico Sunayama and Nakao Ikemiya, as it pictorially transforms moments when physical expressions are formed. The photographs freely traverse memories of the nude body from the past to the future. The series came at a time when pandemic lockdown restrictions were easing in Japan, which in turn eased the photographer’s feeling of suffocation and inertia. Shooting these physical performances therefore became a way to reinvigorate his creativity. The publication comes a decade after Kuge’s photobook ‘Altelier’, which centres on ateliers where artists produce their artworks.
