Born in Aomori Prefecture, Shiko Munakata (1903–1975) was a woodblock print artist best known for his black-and-white works and expressive, sketch-like lines. A self-taught artist, he began his career in oil painting before becoming active in the woodblock printmaking community in Japan. He took many of his themes from the traditions of his native region in northern Japan. Around 1936, he garnered support from leaders of the folk art movement and his work began to heavily feature Buddhist imagery. In the post-war period he created prints with English text, as well as bright colours, various animals, and female nudes representing the Shinto spirits that inhabit trees and plants.
