Traditionally used by pilgrims to record their visits to Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines in Japan, goshuinchō are notebooks consisting of a single long sheet of Japanese paper, or ‘washi’, folded accordion-style into multiple pages. Nowadays these colourful little books are popular with tourists as a way to commemorate their trip. Each sacred site has it own vermilion red seals which are stamped on the pages of the notebook, along with beautiful black calligraphy – hence the name “goshuinchō”, which literally translates as scarlet seal book. But even if travelling to Japan is not in your future, you can use this finely produced notebook for whatever creative activity you dream up.
