Photographer Peter Granser created this very personal work in October 2016, immediately following his father’s death. He chose to grapple with this loss by visiting a cave and the forest on Mount Paradajs, Slovakia. The photographs evoke the impermanence of all things in nature’s inexorable cycle, showing how, despite the darkness, the world around us can still be a source of beauty and hope. The book’s distinctive design – its contents are left unprotected, with the cover material inserted in the centre – metaphorically provides stability from within. In the middle of the publication is a poem by Robert Lax, which divides the narrative character of the images into a “before” and “after”.
