Dealing with existing buildings is of particular importance if we want to tackle the climate crisis, climate vulnerability and social inequality. Using the example of two housing developments in Linz and Vienna, the comprehensive study shows how an eco-social transformation can preserve the existing and carefully integrate the new – starting with urban planning, through the scale of the building down to the details. The residential complexes examined are examples of typical 20th century construction methods – brick construction from the 1920s to 1950s and prefabricated reinforced concrete construction from the 1960s and 1970s. However, the case studies serve as a blueprint for the actual eco-social transformation of existing buildings and can be implemented regardless of construction method and location. Detailed data analysis and graphics tackle topics such as emissions, reuse, heating and hot water, natural air conditioning and lighting, structure, fire protection and green spaces. The book serves as a stimulus and guide for planners and builders who want to minimize emissions during the construction and operation of buildings, strengthen climate resilience and adapt living spaces to extreme weather conditions – and for interested laypeople who want to understand the interrelationships of an eco-social transformation at all scales.
