Israeli-born artist Peter Loewy employs photography for this series of so-called “blurred meta-portraits”, black-and-white images which at first glance seem to be extremely out of focus. In fact, Loewy made extremely zoomed-in photographs of portraits found in drawings by a variety of artists, thereby engendering multiple levels of context and perception within a framework of conceptual art. The knowledge of how these images were created raises issues of authenticity and aesthetic reality, while the series as it is presented here plays with the genres involved. Includes a short essay by Stefana Sabin on the subject.
