Since 2009, Hank Schmidt in der Beek has been producing the ongoing series “Und im Sommer tu ich malen” (And in Summer I Do Paint). Together with photographer Fabian Schubert, he travels through Europe to paint a kind of self-portrait. We see a painter in painterly landscapes. But rather than producing a depiction of the often famously art historical scene before him, the artist draws inspiration from the pattern on his shirt. The work therefore combines conceptual and concrete art as well as plein-air with portrait painting. The book juxtaposes the painting with the photograph of the moment of its genesis – an homage to modernist painting and its documentation.
