The most famous work of Seisuke Yamamura, this brilliantly coloured map depicts Meiji-era Tokyo (1868–1912), with its main palaces, temples, and public buildings represented by pictograms. The Imperial Palace complex holds a place of honour at the city’s centre, while Tokyo’s bustling port stretches along the bay. Incredibly detailed, the map shows every street, canal, and significant site in the city. The various districts are rendered in their true, vivid colours and are identified by elegant colour registers. Tokyo is portrayed in all the prosperity and optimism that characterised the capital in the latter half of the 19th century - a time when the city was undergoing a rapid transformation from an isolated agrarian society into a hyper-industrialised military power with explosive population growth. This work was a commercial success, with six editions published. However, the original map - produced by the publishing house of Shirobē Ōkura, a wholesaler and manufacturer of popular prints - was issued in limited quantities and, being relatively fragile, is now extremely rare.
