This notebook features a selection of plates by the Dutch artist Berthe Hoola van Nooten from her work 'Flowers, Fruits and Foliage Selected from the Island of Java: Painted from Life' (1863). Upon arriving on the island during the colonial period of the Dutch East Indies, the artist created illustrations of the local flora, guided by the Javanese naturalist Radhen Salikin and inspired by the work of pioneers such as Maria Sibylla Merian and Elizabeth Blackwell. Depicted with remarkable clarity and precision, Berthe van Nooten’s flowers, fruits, and foliage capture the lush diversity of tropical forms and colours, beautifully highlighted by the chromolithographs of Pieter de Pannemaecker, a printer and painter from Ghent.
