Trained as a painter, Alice Kettle turned her focus to stitched textiles and established a unique area of practice through her consistent and wide-ranging use of this craft medium. Tiny individual stitches combine to form great swathes of colour, painterly backgrounds incorporating rich hues and metallic sheen. ‘Thread Bearing Witness’ is a major new series of large textiles and other works in which Kettle considers cultural heritage, refugee displacement, and the movement of people. The project also engages with individual migrants and their creativity within the wider context of the global refugee crisis, whereby the artist listened to their stories and collaborated with them.
