'The Ideal Form' is the latest manifestation of an ongoing body of work by the Antwerp-based artist Paul Hendrikse. As with Hendrikse’s related installations, performances, and printed works, the book considers the complex legacy of Lode Craeybeckx, the mayor of Antwerp who oversaw the city’s rapid expansion from 1946 until his death in 1976. Among his many initiatives, Craeybeckx was instrumental in turning the Middelheim park outside of Antwerp into the world-class sculpture museum it is today. Sampling the Middelheim’s collection allows Hendrikse to chart the intricate relations between modernist form, the politics of postwar reconstruction, and the various performances involved in collecting, displaying, and looking at ‘public’ sculpture.
